Case of a 2.5GHz VCO

For a recent 2.5GHz VCO designed by the staff of a global IC market leader, we were tasked with porting from one process node to another and optimizing it for power, performance, and area while maintaining the original phase noise specification.


We achieved some pretty impressive results:

 • One Analog Design per Day: circuit porting, dataset generation, ML model building and AI-based optimization took a total 10 hours.  

  • Simulation speed: Achieved a 19,000x speedup compared to SPICE-like simulators, breaking our previous record of 8,000x.
• Power and Area: Reduced power consumption by 20% and area by 40% in just 6 minutes of AI-based optimization.
• PVT robustness: Added our self-tuning technique to achieve ±1%  variation in center frequency and power consumption across the full PVT range, all with  minimal overhead.
